In addition to hosting conference attendees, Grapevine students participated in the conference’s inaugural Bilingual Brilliance Student Showcase at SDSU on Saturday, January 25th.

There’s more to dual-language learning than just learning a second language, especially for those who are non-native Spanish speakers,” says Hernandez. “It’s also about understanding the social and cultural element; and being open to learning about other people’s culture, history, and geography throughout Latin America and Spain, in addition to speaking the language. It’s a unique kind of understanding and it gives the students a better and diverse view.”

Grapevine Elementary Hosts Out of This World Robot Challenge Parade

An administrative mistake in Texas has resulted in a fun and engaging learning opportunity for the students and families of Grapevine Elementary. In early December, Grapevine Principal Myrna Hernandez received communication from Firefly Aerospace asking the school to consider celebrating one of its lunar mission engineers, who they thought was an alumnus of Grapevine.

While the school couldn’t locate the student's records, Hernandez and her team decided to make the most of a connection to a rocket scientist and leverage it into a learning experience for students.

“We launched a home project over winter break, where students got to create and make robots at home out of recycled materials, or whatever they had access to. When we returned to school, we had a day where they brought them in and we did a whole parade with these little robots."

The photoshoot will support a feature article in The Companion, the official magazine of Canine Companions, a national organization that has placed nearly 8,000 therapy dogs throughout its history.

“I don’t have a lesson plan. It’s a natural process and she helps teach students empathy. Most of their language skills have plateaued by this age so it’s the social part that is so important. Jenny has been a great asset in sparking  conversation during unstructured time on campus, which has been so good for my students working on social language skills.”
