Behavior & School Discipline
Student Support Services provides professional development, consultation and support for our schools to implement positive school wide behavior expectations and acknowledgement systems to ensure that all students develop mindsets and behaviors that are conducive to a safe and restorative school culture.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
By implementing evidence-based practices within a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework, schools utilize data to make informed decisions and implement effective practices to support students’ academic, social, emotional, and behavioral success. Our schools partner with families to make education culturally responsive, and create learning environments where every student feels valued, connected to the school community, and supported by caring adults. See the VUSD PBIS Handbook.
Celebrating PBIS Recognition
Our schools continue to enhance their behavior systems to create safe, predictable, positive, and equitable learning environments. We are excited to announce that VUSD schools have been recognized again by California Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (CA PBIS) for their commitment to supporting the academic, behavioral, social and emotional, and mental health needs of students through a multi-tiered system of support. Twenty-two schools received Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze awards for PBIS implementation. Congratulations to all of our award-winning schools! See the VUSD MTSS webpage.
Behavior Expectations and School Discipline
Expectations for behavior and school discipline are shared with students and families through our annual notifications during registration. Each school provides specific information about their PBIS system through their School Handbooks and explicit teaching of school wide behavior expectations and acknowledgement systems.

Readmission from Expulsion
Students can apply for readmission through the Student Support Services office. Our readmission process is designed to help students return to school with support, structure, and encouragement.
Students and families must submit proof of condition completion—such as certificates, recommendation letters, or updated grades/transcripts—as part of the readmission process. These documents can be emailed directly to Administrative Secretary Tania Perez at taniaperez@vistausd.org or dropped off in person at our Student Support Services office. Please ensure all submissions include the student’s full name for proper processing.
Readmission Hearing
After the submitted documents are reviewed, students and their families will be invited to participate in a readmission hearing. This meeting is an opportunity to review the student’s progress and determine their eligibility to return to school. The hearing will be conducted by Dr. Faus, Executive Director of Student Support Services.
