Student Success Team (SST)
The purpose of a Student Success Team (SST) is to problem-solve and to identify supports in the general education setting which allow a student to be successful in that setting. Each VUSD school has an SST process in place aligned to the VUSD Student Success Team Handbook.
Existing law has interpreted SSTs to be a general education function.
Before the SST
All students have access to universally designed and differentiated instruction at the universal, supplemental, and intensified levels through a continuum of support. The continuum of support addresses the unfinished learning where evidence-based instructional practices are implemented to ensure student success.
When the continuum of support is not meeting the needs of a student, a Student Success Team (SST) meeting is held to address parent and/or staff member concerns regarding a student’s learning, speech acquisition, language acquisition, behavior, social and emotional, and/or attendance needs.
During the SST
A Student Success Team includes the student (if appropriate), parents/guardians, educators, administrators, and specialists (when appropriate).
The team will strategize to identify student goals, additional supplemental and/or intensified evidence-based instructional practices and supports, progress monitoring data that will be collected during the intervention phase, and determination of next steps regarding implementation of the interventions.
A Parent’s Role in the Student Success Team
After the SST
Educators implement the intervention plan and collect progress monitoring data to support follow-up meetings with the team.
During the follow-up meeting(s), the team reviews progress monitoring data and engages in a discussion to determine the effectiveness of the interventions. This information contributes to the next steps in the intervention plan to ensure each student receives what they need, when and where they need it.
