Martha Alvarado is a life-long public servant and an award-winning educator who was elected to serve as a Vista Unified School Board Trustee (VUSD) in 2018.  As a Marine Corps veteran and an elementary school teacher with 25 years of classroom experience, Martha is passionate about serving the Vista and Oceanside community.  Originally from Los Angeles, she has lived in North San Diego County for 32 years.

Martha graduated from Palomar College while on active duty and transferred to California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) in 1997. In 1998, she graduated with honors from CSUSM, becoming the first in her family to earn a college degree.  She continued her education, completing a bilingual teaching credential in 1999.

Martha is very proud of her son Pedro, a product of VUSD.  Pedro attended Temple Heights Elementary, Roosevelt Middle School and Vista High School.  In 2014, he graduated from Vista High School with honors earning a scholarship to Northwestern University.  He completed his bachelor's degree in 2018.  Soon after, Pedro enrolled at New York University (NYU).  In 2020, he completed his Master’s Degree at NYU.

Martha lives in Peacock Hills, near the Summerview, Tri-City and Rancho De Oro neighborhoods of the district.  She represents Trustee Area 3.

Her priorities as a trustee are to close opportunity gaps with marginalized students, increase the percentage of students attending postsecondary education and to expand dual language programs.
