Safety & Environmental

The top priority for VUSD is the safety of our students and staff.  In that regard, the position of Safety & Environmental Manager was formed July 2012.  Jeff Geyer, formerly Maintenance Manager, transitioned into this important position.  His daily focus is solely on the safety, emergency preparedness and environmental responsibilities of VUSD.

Every VUSD school site has a Comprehensive Safe Schools Plan which includes a site specific Emergency Action Plan.  Using National Incident Management System (NIMS) protocols, these emergency action plans address natural disasters and man-made disasters both isolated and widespread.  The safety of our students is of utmost important to us, as demonstrated by regular emergency exercises practicing for fire, earthquake, and intruder events.  There is continual evaluation by high level District administrators of each school site’s security in an endeavor to provide a safer environment.

Working closely with Donna Caperton, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services and Dr. Devin Vodicka, VUSD Superintendent, this office is refining District-level emergency action plans to support the schools within the District and the community at large.  We understand our potential role to the community if a community-wide disaster were to take place.  To that end, a District Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is being developed at the formerly North Star Academy location next to the District Office.

Another important aspect of VUSD safety involves our collaboration with emergency services responders.  We closely partner with San Diego Sheriffs, Oceanside Police Department (OPD), Vista/Oceanside Fire Departments, in addition to Vista/Oceanside Traffic Engineers.  Through continual communication with these agencies, we have fostered an immediate response and action relationship for any given emergency.

In addition, this office ensures uniform compliance with the many environmental regulations.  This office provides oversight of permitting, storage and disposal of regulated substances, science and medical chemicals/materials, used oils, light bulbs, batteries, paints, etc.
