T.H.E. Leadership Academy

T.H.E. Leadership Academy opened in 2003 and recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. The mission of educators there is “to educate all students to become eager, compassionate lifelong learners and creative problem solvers.” They accomplish this by providing an engaging, safe learning environment with high expectations and accountability, Principal Kim Morton said. By encouraging students to say “please” and “thank you,” educators there have built a culture of respect for all students and adults on campus.

It’s one of only two elementary schools in the district that offer weekly music lessons for all students. The program is paid for through PTA fundraisers. Music education is highly valued on campus, Morton said. The parent-teacher group also sponsors educational assemblies and a read-a-thon, jog-a-thon and book fair. All students participate in a schoolwide reading program called Accelerated Reader that encourages independent reading with specific goals.

The school has about 650 students and 28 teachers. Students there have consistently met targets on statewide test scores, including each separate demographic groups. Several events throughout the year bring parents, students and the community together, including a family campout, Halloween carnival, family movie nights, family educational nights, Valentine’s dance and Music on the Green.
